Available Certification Trainings
Prerequisite CORE Peer Specialist Training
A 3-day training where participants learn about the fundamental principles and skills of peer support work in Texas.
Completion of Prerequisite CORE Training is required to take the RSPS and MHPS training.
Recovery Support Peer Specialist (RSPS) Training
If you are interested utilizing your lived experience in substance use recovery to support others, this 5-day training is for you.
Completion of Prerequisite CORE Training is required to take this training.
Mental Health Peer Specialist (MHPS) Training
If you are interested utilizing your lived experience in mental health recovery to support others, this 5-day training is for you.
Completion of Prerequisite CORE Training is required to take this training.
Peer Specialist Supervisor (PSS) Training
This is a 2-day training, that will explore the fundamental basics of the peer supervisor role, principles, values, and ethical practices.
Supervision
To receive full certification in the state of Texas, 250 hours of volunteer or paid work experience is required. This must be specific to being a Mental Health Peer Specialist (MHPS) or Recovery Support Peer Specialist (RSPS).

Peer Specialists support individuals in a wide range of non-clinical activities including advocacy, navigation and linkage to resources, sharing of experience, social support, community and relationship building, group facilitation, skill building, mentoring, goal setting, and more.

You are Generally Required to:
Be At Least 18 Years of Age
Have Lived Experience with Mental Health and/or Substance Use Challenges
Have a High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma
Be Willing to Share Your Recovery Experience with Others

A High Level Overview of the steps required are as follows:
Step 1 - “Pass” Prerequisite Core Training Knowledge Assessment.
Step 2 - “Pass“ Supplemental (Mental Health Peer Specialist and/or Recovery Support Peer Specialist) Training Knowledge Assessment.
Step 3 - Complete 250 Hours of Initial Supervised Work Experience.
